Concussions in Rocklin

Complete Concussions

The most common type of brain injury in Rocklin is a concussion, which is a type of mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). They can be  caused by falls, sports related injuries to the head, and jolts due to car accidents. Concussions can happen to people of any age, from small children to senior citizens, and are often overlooked. Only 10%  of the time or less due concussions cause a loss of consciousness. However, even a slight bump can jolt the brain enough to cause injury.

THE MOST COMMON SYMPTOMS OF A CONCUSSION IN ROCKLIN ARE:

  • Headache
  • Dizziness
  • Sensitivity to light and sound
  • Poor balance
  • Fatigue
  • Pressure in the head
  • Problems with thinking or remembering
  • Nervousness
  • Irritability
  • Changes in personality
  • Difficulty falling asleep and/or staying asleep

We know now that the most important factor in recovery time from concussion is the length of time injured people take to receive evaluation and treatment by a qualified healthcare provider. Early and appropriate treatment can shorten recovery, decrease symptoms and speed people's ability to get their life back on track.

THERE ARE 5 SUBTYPES OF CONCUSSION:

  1. Autonomic Nervous System Dysfunction
  2. Neuro-inflammation
  3. Visual/Vestibular Dysfunction
  4. Neck Dysfunction
  5. A combination of the conditions listed above

Accurately identifying the subtype of concussion is important to help guide proper treatment. As of today, 5%-30% of people who have experienced concussions have symptoms that persist and develop Post Concussive Syndrome (PCS). Patients with symptoms persisting longer than 30 days are considered to have PCS.

POST CONCUSSIVE SYNDROME OR PERSISTENT CONCUSSION SYMPTOMS (PCS) CAN BE BROKEN DOWN INTO 4 MAIN AREAS:

  1. Cognitive:difficulty focusing, memory issues, concerns with thinking
  2. Sleep:fatigue, difficulty falling asleep and staying asleep
  3. Mood/ Behavior:irritability, personality changes
  4. Physical:headaches, neck pain, dizziness, sensitivity to light and sound
